Regarding the deteriorating situation in Romania

Honourable Chair, Dear Mr. Zarzalejos,

I am writing to you as a fellow MEP who is deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation of the rule of law in Romania, one of the EU member states.
After the Constitutional Court of Romania invalidated the results of the first round of presidential elections in December 2024, the country is experiencing a deep political crisis.

According to various European media reports and the Romanian prosecutors’ statements from 26.02.2025 Mr. Calin Georgescu, winner of the first election round and lead candidate of the 4th May rerun, was arrested and investigated the same day.
As Chair of the EP Committee, which safeguards the rule of law and bolsters fundamental rights of EU citizens, I kindly ask you about your knowledge of the current escalation of rule of law in Romania.

What concrete evidence is there to annul the first round of the presidential election? What evidence is there for the arrest warrant against the presidential candidate, Mr. Georgescu?

Has the Committee received any information on the matter or asked for an exchange of view with the Romanian authorities as well as the different political parties involved in the election process?

Have there been or will there be discussions in your committee on the political situation after the (annulled) elections in Romania?
Was or is the Committee planning to observe the situation on the ground as part of an official Committee delegation visit?
Thank you for considering this urgent matter.

I remain at your disposal for further discussion or clarification.

Yours sincerely,
MEP Dr. Friedrich PÜRNER
